AMUN=national god of Ammonites. Amun means the builder or architect and is, like the name of Egyptian god, formed of amān, to sustain. He was the god of the meridian and of the central house-pole, sustaining roof who, in Egypt, became Amen-ra (Sayce and Gesenius, quoted by Hewitt, _op. cit._). The supreme god of the Ammonites was Nāgash, the constellation of Ursa Major (Hewitt).
