XVI.

Facts used as _signs_ or _characteristics;_ and, as such, mostly applied to the purposes of classification, are either physical or moral--_physical_, as when we determine a class from colour of the skin; _moral_, as when we determine one from the purity or impurity of the habits.

Moral characteristics are either philological (_i.e._ connected with the language), or non-philological (_i.e._ not so connected).
