LIII.

French.

Las, qu’on verra grand peuple tourmenté, Et la Loy Sainte en totale ruine, Par autres Loix toute la Chrestienté, Quand d’Or, d’Argent trouve nouvelle Mine.

English.

Alas, how a great people shall be tormented, And the Holy Law in an utter ruine; By other Laws, all Christendom troubled, When new Mines of Gold and Silver shall be found.

ANNOT.

This is a true Prophecy of the mischiefs that have happened in the World by the finding of the Mines in _America_; first to the _Indians_ themselves, called here a great People, by the cruelty of the _Spaniards_, and then to all Christendom besides, by the evils that this Idol _Mammon_ hath brought into it.
